Too many stories of school sports coaches taking advantage of their positions are making headlines. If the headlines are to be believed, it would appear that the sexual abuse of children is widespread in schools and sports institutions throughout South Africa… but is it really – and why? In 2019 the South African Council of Educators (SACE) recorded a whopping 122 cases of sexual abuse of pupils by teachers, and this number excludes the 2 out of 3 cases of sexual assault that go unreported. This series uncovers the truth behind grooming in schools across the country, the aftermath and what government, schools and society are doing to prevent this happening in future.
